Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence
In declaring independence from Britain, the Declaration’s drafters had to unify the thirteen colonies, each of which had varying interests. Some of the colonies based their economies on commerce, while others relied heavily on agriculture. Some of the Declaration’s signers were as old as 70, while others were as young as 26. Some of the signers were devout religious adherents, while others ascribed to Enlightenment principles and Deism. Despite their varying interests, the signers of the Declaration of Independence created a unifying document that has served our country for 250 years.
Reflect on a time when you and others sought to accomplish a collective goal where, like the drafters of the Declaration, you had to create unity among a group of people with diverse or even competing interests, priorities, or agendas. Explain what the collective goal was and discuss how you achieved it—or could have achieved it—by bringing together the varying and diverse interests of those involved. For instance, did you need to compromise, step outside of your comfort zone, consider new ideas, or adopt a novel approach? What lessons did you learn along the way, and what advice would you give to others who are similarly seeking to achieve a collective goal that requires the consideration of diverse interests?
