Biography:

On July 28, 2000, Judge John E. Steele was sworn in as a United States District Judge in the Fort Myers Division of the Middle District of Florida. Prior to this appointment, Judge Steele served as a United States Magistrate Judge in the Jacksonville Division of the Middle District of Florida from 1991 to 2000.

Judge Steele started his career in the Wayne County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney after receiving his Juris Doctor from University of Detroit Law School in 1973. In 1980, Judge Steele worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Grand Rapids, Michigan U.S. Attorney’s Office, until his transfer to the State of Florida. From 1981 to 1988, Judge Steele continued to work as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Jacksonville, Florida U.S. Attorney’s Office. After leaving the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Judge Steele worked in the litigation department for Mahoney Adams & Criser and served as Chairman of the Litigation Department from 1989 through 1991, when his judicial service commenced. Judge Steele is a member of the Michigan and Florida State Bars.
